David Griggs has a strong interest in exploring the darker side of humanity through the medium of photography, painting, video, sculpture and travel. Most recently he has started to explore the use of painting in a sculptural form, creating installation work for his 2007 exhibition Blood on the streets at Uplands Gallery, Melbourne and Artspace, Sydney. Griggs is an avid traveller and has spent several years travelling through India, China and Nepal. As the artist writes ‘For many years I had been interested in the diversity of culture and religion housed throughout Asia’ and in 2005 he undertook an Asialink Residency in Manila, Philippines. It was here that the artist’s interest in exploring marginalised and repressed communities provided inspiration for his proposed Melbourne Art Fair 2008 Artist Commission.

Griggs' work has been included in Primavera, Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney (2006); Strange Cargo, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery NSW (2006); and, Not All Heroes and Legends, Powerhouse Museum Sydney (2003). Griggs has been the recipient of several international residencies including the Art Gallery of New South Wales Cité studio in Paris (2007) and the Ateneo University in Manila for the Asialink Residency (2005), which inspired The Bleeding Hearts Club and Blood on the Streets series of works. David Griggs' recent significant solo exhibitions have included Exchanging Culture for Flesh, Art Gallery of New South Wales Sydney (2006); The Buko Police, Green Papaya Art Projects Manila (2005); Destination Disaster, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces Melbourne (2004); and, Outside History, The Studio Sydney Opera House (2003). His work is held in the collections of Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney; Newcastle Region Art Gallery, NSW; Powerhouse Museum, Sydney; Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, NSW; and, Tamworth Regional Art Gallery, NSW. David Griggs is represented by Kaliman Gallery, Sydney and Uplands Gallery, Melbourne.
