5:00 PM SHADOW – Fawn Krieger
EDITION: 500
COLLABORATION WITH NEW MUSEUM, NEW YORK
5:00 Shadow Paperweight, designed by New York-based artist Fawn Krieger, was inspired by a sculpture she created for her project, COMPANY, a shop-as-work-of art that began in 2007. COMPANY sells merchandise that keeps us company, standing between the crossroads of object-hood and intimacy, touch and possession.
Measuring roughly 6 x 4 x 2 inches, a bit larger than the artist’s own jawline, the object has been cast in a heavy resin that is smooth on one side and resembles stubble on the other. Five o’clock shadows aren’t in fact shadows at all, but a term coined to describe the re-growth of facial hair by the end of a long day. It’s a look that is often desired, acquired, cultivated, and mythologized, and at the same time remains both democratic and anti-climactic. 5:00 Shadow Paperweight inverts the notion of a shadow as something weightless and immaterial into an object of choice; this item can hold down your to-do’s on your desk, while also allowing you to secretly try on alternate personas or genders. This static object, which implies interaction, highlights Krieger’s ongoing interest in performative gestures, theatrical props, and the inherent possibilities of the stage.
